End-stage renal disease after renal cancer surgery: Risk factors and overall survival

Last Updated: Wednesday, June 26, 2024

Researchers investigated risk factors for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in patients who underwent surgical treatment for RCC. It found that patients who developed ESRD had significantly poorer survival outcomes, with advanced age, comorbidities, higher-stage tumors, and radical nephrectomy identified as the risk factors. It was determined that efforts to spare renal function, including nephron-sparing surgery and active surveillance in appropriate cases, were highly relevant to reduce the development of severe kidney dysfunction.
