Statin use, survival and incidence of thrombosis among older patients with polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia
Last Updated: Monday, December 4, 2023
Data from a study of older adults with PV and ET show that 55.8% used statins within the first year after their PV/ET diagnosis, and that statin use was associated with a 22% reduction in all-cause mortality (propensity score matching [PSM]: HR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.63–0.98, p = 0.03; inverse probability of treatment weighting [IPTW]: HR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.64–0.97, p = 0.03). Further, statins reduced the risk of thrombosis in the overall population (PSM: HR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.51–0.78, p < 0.01; IPTW: HR = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.49–0.66, p < 0.01) as well as in the PV and ET subgroups.
