Understanding gastric GIST: From pathophysiology to personalized treatment

Last Updated: Wednesday, August 28, 2024

Gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) carry substantial implications for patient health and management. They originate from the interstitial cells of Cajal, which are positioned between the intramural neurons and the smooth muscle cells of the digestive tract and are potentially malignant with unpredictable progression. Researchers analyzed 71 papers and determined that the prognosis for GIST patients depends on factors such as risk category, disease stage, applied treatments, and recurrence post-treatment. Artificial intelligence can be increasingly involved in both the diagnosis and treatment of this tumor.
