Sporadic multiple gastrointestinal stromal tumors with distinct KIT and PDGFRA mutations in two separate tumors: A case report and literature review

Last Updated: Wednesday, January 28, 2026

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors typically harbor KIT or PDGFRA mutations, which are usually mutually exclusive. A case study of a 60-year-old male revealed two distinct stomach tumors with different morphologies and immunohistochemical profiles. Each tumor carried a different mutation, highlighting that multiple synchronous GISTs can possess separate genetic mutations. Recognizing these variations is vital for accurate diagnosis and personalized therapy.
