Partial resection of rectum for rectal GIST by posterior approach
This retrospective case series study investigates the efficacy and safety of a posterior surgical approach for treating rectal gastrointestinal stromal tumors, including the surgical procedure, which involves a skin incision near the sacrum and careful dissection to access the rectum, sometimes requiring coccyx excision. The study analyzes four male patients who underwent this procedure, reporting positive outcomes such as complete tumor resection and a low incidence of Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS), a common complication of other rectal surgeries. It was concluded that the posterior approach offers a valuable and less invasive alternative for rectal GISTs, providing optimal surgical visualization and potentially minimizing postoperative complications.
