Incidental finding of gastrointestinal stromal tumor in appendix
Last Updated: Monday, March 23, 2026
This case report details a rare incidental gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) discovered in the appendix of an 88-year-old female. Initially undergoing an ileocectomy to treat a small bowel obstruction, final pathology unexpectedly identified a low-grade pT1N0 tumor. Because appendiceal GISTs represent just 0.1% of all cases, this finding is exceptionally unique in medical literature. No additional oncologic treatment was required.
