Evaluating boron neutron capture therapy as a potential treatment for unresectable gastrointestinal stromal tumors

Last Updated: Monday, July 7, 2025

This study explores the potential of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) as an alternative treatment for unresectable gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), especially those resistant to current drug therapies like imatinib. The authors investigate the therapy's effectiveness by demonstrating how the boron isotope 10B is selectively taken up by GIST cells, leading to tumor growth suppression through DNA damage and apoptosis upon neutron irradiation. The study provides evidence from both in vitro and in vivo models, suggesting BNCT could be a promising new therapeutic strategy for these challenging cancers.
