Clinical characteristics of gastrointestinal stromal tumors with hypoglycemia

Last Updated: Monday, October 28, 2024

This study focuses on gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) with hypoglycemia, a rare condition often caused by paraneoplastic syndrome (NICTH). A retrospective analysis revealed a 4.1% prevalence of hypoglycemia in GIST patients, with recurrent hypoglycemic episodes linked to worse prognosis. In one case, genetic and histological investigations identified IGF-II amplification as a novel mechanism for NICTH, suggesting that early clonal changes may lead to hypoglycemia during tumor development.
