A rare entity of esophageal gastrointestinal stromal tumor with literature review

Last Updated: Wednesday, January 28, 2026

Esophageal gastrointestinal stromal tumors are exceptionally rare mesenchymal tumors originating from interstitial cells of Cajal. Treatment typically involves a multidisciplinary approach, combining surgical resection with targeted therapies like imatinib. A case study demonstrated that neoadjuvant imatinib significantly reduced tumor size, allowing for successful surgery and prolonged survival. Despite their rarity, coordinated care can lead to excellent clinical outcomes.
