Incidence and risk factors of venous thromboembolism in patients with acute Leukemia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Last Updated: Wednesday, April 23, 2025

This systematic review and meta-analysis of 22 studies found a high overall incidence of VTE in acute leukemia patients at 9%. Older age in both children and adults, and non-B cell or T-cell subtypes in ALL were identified as risk factors. Conversely, Hispanic ethnicity showed a lower risk. In AML, male gender had a lower VTE risk, while in ALL, non-White ethnicity was associated with a lower risk. These findings highlight high-risk groups for clinical attention.
